Subdomains

A simple way to start a website without buying a domain first.

What is a subdomain?

A subdomain is an address that is part of a larger domain.

Example:

yourproject.okinet.net

Here:

  • okinet.net is the main domain
  • yourproject is the subdomain

Visitors can go directly to that address just like any other website.

Why start with a subdomain?

Starting with a subdomain is often the easiest way to launch a new project.

  • no domain purchase required
  • your website can go online immediately
  • perfect for testing ideas or early projects
  • easy to move later to your own domain

Your project name may still be available

Many domain names on the internet are already taken. But with a subdomain you can often still use your preferred project name.

For example, even if this domain is already registered:

yourproject.org

you may still be able to use:

yourproject.okinet.net

This allows you to start your project without searching endlessly for an available domain name.

Typical uses

Subdomains are often used for:

  • small organisations
  • community forums
  • test websites
  • temporary campaigns
  • personal projects
  • early versions of new websites

Many successful projects start this way and later move to their own domain.

Move to your own domain later

If your project grows, it can easily move from a subdomain to its own domain.

For example:

greenfuture.okinet.net

can later become:

greenfuture.org

Okinet can help with that transition.
